Game 2

GomJabbar (Roman): 6 Banners

stephent (Britons): 2 Banners

This second game started similar to the first with the Romans advancing boldly across the river on their right flank. One Roman Medium advanced too far and got surrounded and eliminated for the first Briton medal. The Romans retaliated with a Line Command on the now out of position Britons and eliminated a Warrior unit and their leader. The remaining Warrior on the Roman right was down to 1 block but attacked the full strength Roman Medium with a leader and paid the price. It was now 3 to 1 medals for the Romans. The Romans continued pushing on the right and reduced 2 Auxilia units down to minimal blocks. The Britons counter-attacked in the center with Caratacus and 2 Warrior and 2 Auxilia units. Another Roman Medium unit was defeated and a Light left with one block left but the Roman counterattack reduced Caratacus' Warriors down to 1 block and he had to retreat. A well-played Darken the Sky by Britons had terrible dice rolls. 22 dice were rolled and the only result was a flag on the 1 block Light unit which was actually quite beneficial in the end to the Romans, getting it out of harms way.
A final push by the Romans on the right eliminated the 2 battered Auxilia and forced a Light to flee to the board edge. The Britons then went into a hedgehog around Caratacus with a Double Time but to no avail. We had to adjourn the game at that point and then come back later for the finale. It was a very short finale. A Roman Counter-Attack card copied the Double Time and allowed the Romans to surround the 3-block Light on their board edge with a Auxilia and Medium+Leader. 7 dice needing 4/6 sides to score a hit were very good odds. The Light fell to the Auxilia's 3 dice. A win for the Romans.

Thanks Stephen for the games. That was fun!

Round 4 Game 1
Cavie (Britons) 5 banners
spleen1980 (Roman) 6 banners

Round 4 Game 2
spleen1980 (Britons) 6 banners
Cavie (Roman) 5 banners

Both games were amazing, probably the best scenario of OT2021 so far.
In the first game my roman troops were blessed by an embarassing amount of luck during ranged fire: I think 70% of my ranged fire resulted in hits. An army of snipers.
I had good cards, good dice, everything. Cavie fought very very well, exploiting the hills, using a rally, retreating and reshaping the deployment of the britons and eventually managed to take 5 banners. Were it not for ranged fire, Cavie could have won easily.

While we played game 1 mostly in and around the two center-right and center-left ramparts, game 2 was fought only in the center-right part of the map.
This game was much more balanced. The romans were very aggressive and the game was uncertain until the very end. Cavie probably did not have the best cards, but he managed to deal damage pushing the britons down the hills and out of the ramparts.. The tide turned when I used a rally card and used a renewed 4-block warriors unit to attack a roman med infantry + leader: 4 dice, 4 hits.
After a few incredible dice rolls with no hits and some desperate attacks to win the battle, the game ended 6-5 for the britons.

I really want to thank Cavie for the good games and for his infinite patience with our different time zones.

Round 4 Game 1
mk20336 (Britons) 4 banners
taliapharaoh (Roman) 6 banners

As Brits I had all needed cards, pretty good strategy and some terrible rolls. Travis advanced quickly, well knowing that this is the best way to beat barbarians. I lost almost all my Warriors in various fights and had to accept defeat after concentrated attack in the center.

A different game. As Romans I attacked immediately on left and right wings, being repulsed on one, and achieving break-through (as well as killing enemy leader) on second. There was couple of hilarious rolls for Travis, the tempo of the game was switching but in the end, Romans won again!

Match 1

Polonus100 (Romans): 6 Banners

Dawnreader (Britons): 5 Banners

Wonderful set of cards 3 times of Line Command, 1 Counterattack and Clash of Shieds gave me victory despite good dice rolling and fierce counterattack by Britons. At 5-3 for Romans (after CoS) I had a chance to win last banner killing lone commander by Double Time of M infantry but without success. Lucky couterstrike by Caratacus gave Britons the chance but Romans first climb the hills ant this was decisive factor.

Match 2

Dawnreader (Romans): 1 Banner

Polonus100 (Britons): 6 Banners

This time Romans had weaker cards than me before. All attacks were made against ramparts in central -left part of Britons OoB. But Britons had First Strike. Caratacus regrouped his guard there and made decisive stroke. Last two banners gained by Bowmen in Clash of Shields against enemy M downhill. Scapula died in this combat. Gloria victis! Thanks for fierce battles to Dawnreader.

Game 1
Bangla (Romans) 6 banners
rjvonline (Britons) 4 banners

The Romans had little choice but to be patient early on, and they suffered to the range fire from the Britons.  A Line Command got them into the river, and a concerted attack on the right got them amongst the Briton defences.  Once over the ramparts it looked like a Roman victory but the Britons rallied in the centre and grabbed a couple of banners to bring the score to 5-4 before Rome could finally clinch victory.

Game 3
Bangla (Britons) 6 banners
rjvonline (Romans) 3 banners

Three Line Commands, the perfect cards for a well drilled Roman army.  The Romans were across the river in force, and the Briton line was under pressure everywhere.  The banners were even at 3-3 but the Britons were in full retreat and very vulnerable.  The Roman looked to have the game in the bag.  But a failed attack on an Auxilia unit on their left left a Roman MI vulnerable.  He was attacked by a 1-block Briton Auxilia who eliminated the unit, then killed the accompanying leader, and then attacked a 1-block Roman Auxilia in the rear.  An amazing win grasping victory from the jaws of defeat.  And those jaws were evident in the Roman hand with still a Double Time and 2 Medium Troops cards ready to be played.  The Romans would have won on their next turn for sure.

Two good battles against Renaud, played over Discord as well as Vassal.

1st leg: David I (Romans)  v Benlore (Britons)  6:4 (3:3 at half-time)
2nd leg Benlore (Romans) v David I (Britons)   5:6 (1:1 at half-time)

Two intriguing and looooong games, both really even and hanging on the roll of the dice and a frankly uneven card distribution in the second half of the second leg.

In the first leg the Britons sallied forth on both flanks but were beaten back and eventually were forced to take refuge in the crags. A solid mass of Roman legionnaires then swarmed up the left and centre, picking off weakened units with missile and melee with the final banner an auxilia forced off the battlefield by a javelin from the Roman Light. Meanwhile four severely weakend lights and auxilia watched on from the Roman side of the river. It was a near-run thing.

In the second leg the Roman light troops waded into the river and commenced fire, followed by a trio of legionnaries led by Scapula. More missile fire was exchanged with both sides hesitant to break their lines. The two flanking warrior units with their leaders were sorely depleted and retreated to the hills before a couple of Roman light units made it across the river and provoked a charge on a Line Command with some good rolling leaving it 1:1 but with the Romans having 3 units on 1 block and within melee range. Romans counter-attacked with good success but with an Order Medium the 1-block leaderless warrior on the left was still able to cross the river and destroy the auxilia on the flank while Caractacus finished off the arrow-ridden legionaries in front of Scapula in the centre. Contact was then made along the river with another British line command whilst the Romans suffering from a near-complete dearth of cards magaged to keep even. Britons played Clash of Shields with 3 units eligible to battle. The expected Counter-attack did not materialize and I am Spartacus followed soon thereafter. Somehow the Romans held on and it was 5:5. With weakened units everywhere both sides had opportunities to win but the Britons eventually made the most of their better chances by playing the Spartacus card again! Ben only picked up DoubleTime and Counter Attack right at the end when they could make little impact.

We both enjoyed the challenge of the terrain and the banter. I certainly had the better of the cards in the second round and stil only just snuck home.

Andygor (Romans) 3 banners

Romans had some pretty bad luck with dice and Britons capitalized on a Spartacus card.

Game 3

Game was tied 3-3 and I thought that I (Romans) was in good shape. Out came Clash, followed by a timely First Strike and then Sparatacus, game over.

Fun quick games.

Gomjabbar - Britons 3
Stephent - Romans 6
Romans launched a rapid assault on the right, aided by order medium and two double times, destroying an auxiliary, a light and a warrior, leading 3-0. With the British left destroyed, there followed skirmishing as the Romans tried to hunt the British out of these hills, eventually destroying the other two British left flank units for the loss of 1 medium - but at the same time the British counter-attacked in the centre and their right, destroying two Roman mediums for the loss of a warrior unit in fighting along the river. Final score 6-3 to the Romans, well played by Brad despite having the cards against him

The Romans immediately Line Advanced forward, doing missile fire damage to two WARs. Britons responded with WARs, ultimately costing the Romans three MIs. At 3-0 the Britons were off to a good start. Another turn and the Britons destroyed an Aux and killed a leader with an lc2, taking the game to 5-0 Britons. Undaunted (and perhaps recklessly) the Romans brought their remaining MIs against the center/right ramparts, destroying an Aux, a WAR, and destroying the ramparts. Britons responded with a Double Time, which cost them a unit. The Romans Counterattacked, destroying an Aux and killing a LDR who was on his own. Suddenly the score was 5-5 and it was anyone's game. More action on the center/right, and the Britons took their sixth banner and the game with a mistaken attack from a hill (not allowed as per the special rules for this scenario but which we both forgot about in the heat of battle). Close game!

6 Marco-Britons
4 Gonzo-Romans

The Romans began cautiously, advancing Lights for missile attacks, especially on the left. The Britons responded in kind. The Romans focused on the left, trading missile fire while the Britons reshuffled their line to hide from Roman arrows. The Romans shifted focus to the center/right, concentrating their AUX arrows against the Britons on the ramparts there. The Roman Lights were having a bad arrow day, as they failed to score hits after many shots. Perhaps the Brits were just good at dodging. Arrows flying back and forth, the game was 1 hour 45 mins with one banner to the Britons. More arrows and a Briton LDR fell, giving the Romans their first banner. Finally the Romans advanced on the right, but to no avail. In the end, the Britons outlasted the Romans 6-4. Three and a half hour game!

First battle
Tomek (Romans) - 6 banners
toganalper (Britons) - 5 banners

A very tense battle on both flanks. Each side lost a leader while the Romans assaulted the barricades on the right wing. The savage counter attack of the Britons turned back the auxilia cohorts and the fighting continued in the shallow river. On the left some stormtroopers managed to bring the battle within the hills and the enemy lost heart.

Round 4 Game 1
EZPickins (Britons) 6 banners
scipio1zama (Roman) 1 banner

The Romans opened with a Line Command into the river. Several turns of fire were exchanged before they advanced further. When  they did advance on the left they faced stiff resistance and lost three Auxilia. Fighting on this flank went on for time costing each a unit. They then assaulted the ramparts on the left where they got blasted by good rolls resulting in their defeat.

Game 2
EZPickins (Romans) 3 banners
scipio1zama (Britons) 6 banners

This time the Romans were slow to advance and were content to exchange fire when possible. Two units crossed the river on the right to cause some disruption to the Britons but cost a Light  and Auxilia. Finally the Romans decided to cross and engage in close combat; Unfortunately this didn't go well although some losses were infliced.
With the Romans down in banners and Scapula dead the Britons charged on the left for the win.

Two good games versus a fine player.

Mark McG vs Rand

Round 4 Game 1
Mark McG – Britons – 6 Banners
Rand – Rome – 4 Banners
After ranged attacks on both flanks, Rome advances quickly on the right flank into the Barbarian lines. An early rally by the Britons fails to mobilize more men to the front lines and Roman medium infantry moves up to close with the light units on the right flank. Caratacus leads his warriors and smashes into a group of medium infantry but fails to push the Romans back across the Severn River. A double march allows the Romans to gain the ramparts and push back most of the Britons. Heavy fighting pays out in the Roman right flank in the mountains and the lone remaining rampart, though Scapula is cut down in a mountain pass by warriors. A clash of shields destroys most of the Britons’ left flank and the Briton leader flees off the battlefield to safety. With banners at 4 to 4, the Briton right flank surges forward on an unprepared Rome, catching two light units flatfooted in the riverbed, pushing both back to the edge of the battlefield. Rome attempts to stabilize its lines, but the Britons chase down and smash apart the shaken light units, winning the battle.

Round 4 Game 2
Mark McG – Rome – 3
Rand – Britons – 6
A line command allows the entire Roman army to advance, peppering the Britons with ranged fire. Withering the storm, the Britons hold, but the Roman right flank is quickly on them. Fighting breaks out and the Britons overwhelm the Romans, killing or pushing back all who have crossed the river. A second Roman surge over the river is again broken up and the Britons lead 5 – 2. Sporadic fighting goes on, with pushes and retreats up and down the battlefield, both sides trying to gain the upper hand. The Britons warriors take the brunt of the further fighting, continuously holding back the Romans, though poor cards and improbable dice luck hampers the Romans as well. A Roman unit is cut off and after almost fighting its way free from the trap, is destroyed, giving the Britons the victory.

One of the more interesting terrain minded scenarios, lots of fun to play and tactically challenging. Thank to Mark McG for two great games, and his help with a couple of the rules. Good luck to him in the rest of the tournament.

Match 2
gottoman (Britons): 2 Banners
RiverWanderer  (Romans): 6 Banners

A brief ranged skirmish was soon followed by a warrior attack against the Roman left, the Romans responding with a line advance that developed into close combat across much of the line of the stream. Sheer weight of numbers told against the Britons, made worse by an unlucky Rally and an early leader loss. A Clash of Shields might have made all the difference, but it was not to be and the battle of attrition went to the Romans.

Match 1
RiverWanderer (Britons): 6 Banners
gottoman (Romans): 3 Banners

Romans made early advances across the field, threatening to push exposed Briton units from the hills. Britons sallied out from the ramparts and hills to attack where the Roman attack was weakest in the centre. After some even exchanges, despite a failed "First Strike", the Romans were starting to get the better of this attack, when the Britons played Clash Of Shields and took 3 banners in one turn. Undeterred, the Romans pressed on and gained a third banner from what remained of a Warrior unit defending a rampant. Finally, on the second attempt, the Britons took the win, with a desperate moving ranged attack on single block Auixlia that was about to escape. Perhaps just in time for the Britons, as by now, the Roman position was looking the stronger of the two.

Thanks to Greg for an exciting game. Match 2 is scheduled for Sunday.

Round 4 Cefn Carnedd - Match 1

BrentS (Rome) 6 - Gileforn (Britons) 4

These were two tight, evenly matched games. A very enjoyable, brain burning grind of a scenario. Not one I’d want to play frequently but a good, unique challenge for occasional play. The steep hill SSR takes some concentration to track and is the defining feature of the scenario. This match rolled from the Roman left to right across the battlefield, dictated by the Roman hand. The battle for the left hills ground into bloody deadlock until there were no units of any consequence left there. The action then moved to the centre where the Romans advanced into the river, bore a withering Darken the Sky from the Britons, then Double Timed for a 3 banner play, including a leader kill (lucky but that balanced itself out in the second match). The game then drew out into a cagey hunt for 1 block units until the tigger was pulled on the right and Rome took the final banner. Two fun and very closely contested matches, each of which could have gone either way. Good scenario and very strong play by Andrey. Thanks for some great matches.

That was a fantasti game with Brent. I've lost the first game so was need to reach the better or same result. This scenario is very cool. Hills are changing everything, every movement is very important. Luck was on the both sides but after darken the sky when Brits had a chance to finish a game, and after that with line command auxilaria destroyed warriors. Good both games.
