CCA OT25

R1G1 Nemea
Dave I – Greeks, 2 banners, 17 locks lost.
Steve T – Spartans, 5 banners, 18 blocks lost
After the obligatory flank skirmish, the two phalanxes clashed, with the Spartan left refused. A Greek hoplite Mounted Charge was met by counter-attack, and the Greek left was broken.

R1G2 Nemea
Steve T – Greeks, 4 banners, 21 locks lost.
David I – Spartans, 5 banners, 23 blocks lost
This time the flank skirmish was more impactful – the Greek left flank cavalry was eliminated (0-1) on the rear rank, with the attacking Spartan cavalry being trapped by the Greek hoplites double timing (1-1), but at the cost of splitting the Greek line, which took time and orders to fix, just as the Spartan phalanx was approaching. The Greeks initially refused their left and got the better of the clash on their right (2-1), the Spartan hoplites advanced (3-2), and I played mounted charge, hoping to finish the battle – but both of us forgot the +1! The Spartans got the better of this clash (4-4) and were able to eliminate a further unit to win.

Thanks to Dave for two hard fought battles!

coming up to deadline, so this weekend is the time to get the matches played and reported.

For any newcomers, be aware I don't give extensions to deadlines in usually any cases. There are 50 odd people in the tournament, so the show goes on regardless.

To add on to Anon's description, both of these games had multiple lead changes. I almost pulled out wins in both, but dice didn't cooperate (but were not terrible either); thus two losses for me.

Scrum4you    Spartans      4 Banners

Match 2:

Scrum4you   Greeks         4 Banners
AnoN            Spartans      5 Banners

Evenly matched players whose fates were determined by the Dice and Card Gods.....  Could have went either way.  Most of the fighting was conducted on the flanks in both games.  The Lights and Cavs didn't play much of a role.  Pretty much head to head in 2 separte grounpings.  AnoN got to play a Clash of Shields (which has not often happened in my time w/ the game.  The 2X'x and Mounted Charges were the key in both games.  No First Stike deployed in either game.

(Note: First time write up.  Sorry if files don't load and/or bad write up)

Match 2

Bluesteel (Greeks) 0 banners

Scipio1zama (Spartans) 5 banners

All of the fighting took place on the flanks, and mostly on my (Spartan) left flank. I got some lucky rolls to take out both of his MC, then he moved up on me with MH on my left flank. I used a First Strike to blunt his attack AND eliminate his leader there with a 1-in-36 leader check. He had two MH reduced to 1-block each, and my next attack took them both out for the win. My Spartan Bronze Block MH never even got to engage.

Log: ? How does one attach a file?

You can add files from the Forum, either by making a post and adding attachments, or edit your post and adding attachments.
For technical reasons I don't understand, you can't add files when using the discussion of an article. So I frequently write up the report, and then immediately edit it to add the logfiles. Just me making the technology work, rather than it working for me..

Results : Spartan 5-Greeks 2

Recap:
The Greeks have a beautiful opening hand 2xMounted Charges and a Double Time. They immediate plan to tempt the Spartan left into a crushing vice, and proceed to eviscerate them before the bronze units can throw their weight around. The Greeks open with a weakly supported advance on their right, the Spartans take the bait and it's on. Unfortunately, the innovation of arming your hoplites with moldy carrots and paper fans will not stand the test of time. Instead of crushing the Spartan salient, the Greeks gleefully throw themselves onto the Lacedaemonian pikes. The Greeks save a little face, but it's all over at that point.

Recap:
The opening hand is favorable for the Spartans, with an MC, line command and Order Medium. They'll get a double-time after the opening trade of missile fire. Nothing too cute here. The line command gets the bronze units into double time range, and they'll smash into the Spartan center and get busy. The action is brutal, and the Aristodemus eventually cashiers the remains of the Greek center pushed to the edge of the map.

In the first game, I had the better dice rolls and cards. My luck continued in the second game; for example, twice I eliminated a full-strength unit on 4 dice. Meanwhile, I don't think Evan ever managed to roll more than two hits on a go.  Thank goodness he was such a good sport about the seismic differences in luck. At least it made the games quick!

Results of Round 1 games from dawnreader and gdnuke:

Game 1

dawnreader (Greeks) 2 banners
gdnuke (Spartans) 5 banners

Game 2

gdnuke (Greeks) 4 banners
dawnreader (Spartans) 5 banners

Two good close games as Round 1 begins with open ground and evenly matched forces!  Best cards and dice will win with players on the same experience level. The Spartan cavalry was the first unit to go in each game. Dawnreader went after the Spartans strongest units with a Double Time card in game one, but his troops came off second best in the decisive exchanges of dice. Gdnuke tried to avoid those units in game two and go after weaker Spartan Allies on the Spartan left and center left. He came close, but the 5-block Spartans came up with crucial attacks to win the rematch.
Sparta 2 Greeks 0. A fun and quick scenario!

something I have neglected to mention

we have several Russians playing in the tournament, and any email from Protonmail (or any other encrypted email) will be blocked in Russia. This has caused some problems in previous tournaments.
I understand both sides of this coin, privacy and security, and if necessary, I will act as an intermediary for any comms of this nature.

Also, a reminder that the deadline is 31 March, which is 10 days away.

Milla (Greeks) 2 banners

The Greeks split their forces to send out a detachment to deal with the Spartan Cavalry. Spotting a hole in the line, the Spartan's took advantage and piled into the gap, sending the Athenians fleeing back to their wives (wimps!).

In true Hoplite style, both sides waded into head-on-battle. The Spartans were the first to blink and duly overwhelmed by a tide of shields and spears.

Game 1
GomJabbar (Greek) 5 banners
EZPickins (Spartan) 4 banners

EZ's Spartans started with a feint of his MC vs my Greek MC pushing then all the way to the back line and 1 block remaining before having to retreat back. This will prove in the end to be the Spartan downfall. My Greek Hoplites massed on their right flank to avoid the 5-block hoplites and because of cards in hand. Once prepared the Greek played 2 Double Time cards in a row to devastating effect. The Greek and Spartan Hoplites continued in a fierce melee each ending up with 4 banners before the dust settled. Then there was a gap between forces. We each needed 1 banner to win. My lone Light was in range of the Spartan lone MC with 1 block remaining. I played Darken the Sky and thankfully on the second attack I got the blue triangle I needed to win 5-4.

Game 2
EZPickins (Greek) 3 banners
GomJabbar (Spartan) 5 banners

This time my Spartans played it cautious separating forces and grouping on the flanks. EZ again feinted with the MC and was successful this time taking out my MC. However his MC was overextended and easily surrounded and destroyed by my 5-block Spartan Hoplites. The the battle started in earnest again on the Spartan left flank. The Greeks tried a tentative advance forward on that flank but then retreated once they saw the block of Spartan Hoplites moving toward them. I had great Left Flank cards and my MHs moved inexorably forward. Again there was a fierce melee on the left flank and the turning point was the Greek leader lost. It was 4-2 for Spartans, looking bleak for Greeks when they tried a last ditch Mounted Charge. The dice were against him though. The MC managed to eliminate a Hoplite but stalled against the second one and a battle back eliminated the MC for the win.

Note that in the second game I noticed after reviewing the vlog that EZ (and I) forgot to add the +1 die for Mounted Charge which may have changed the outcome if a flag had been rolled with that extra die. EZ didn't want to redo the last part of the game and graciously let the result stand.

Thanks EZPickins for the games. They were quick and fun!
