Historical Background
Two neighboring city-states, Umma and Lagash, often fought over border territories. One of these lands was called Gueden ("the edge of the steppe"). The ruler of the city of Kish, lugal Mesilima, defined the boundary between the disputants and established a boundary stele there. The ruler of Umma, Ensi Ush, violated the truce and invaded Gueden, the border stele was destroyed. It is possible that Gueden belonged to the Ummah before Meselim's intervention, and Ush decided to return what he had lost. In response, the Lagash people began to gather an army and elected Eanatum as lugal. He marched against Usha, and inflicted a severe defeat on him in battle. Ush suffered huge losses of 3,600 soldiers at that time and, apparently, was killed as a result of the uprising that broke out in the Ummah after this defeat. The territory was returned to Lagash, and the broken border stele was restored. The inhabitants of Umma and the new ruler of Anakalle swore an oath never to invade the Lagash region, and to pay tribute. The victory over the Ummah was immortalized on the so-called "Vulture Stele".
