This self-propelled howitzer vehicle was developed on the chassis of the M5 Stuart tank and equipped with a 75 mm M116 (L/18.4) howitzer in a fully-rotating open-topped turret. These units provided infantry close support against enemy fortified positions, with the high elevation (40 degrees) of the howitzer being useful for hitting elevated positions. It carried a crew of four (commander, gunner, driver, assistant driver/loader) and had a top speed of 36 mph. The Cadillac division of the General Motors company produced 1,778 M8s from September 1942 through January 1944. They served the U.S. Army in the Italian Campaign, the Western Front, and in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The 105mm howitzer variant of the M4 Sherman tank started replacing M8s in 1944, but the type remained in French service into the 1960s.
