Germany developed this heavy towed anti-tank gun in response to experiences against the Soviet 122 mm guns in 1943. The 12.8 cm PaK 44 (L/55) had good short- to medium-range performance similar to the 8.8 cm Pak 43, but maintained its anti-tank performance more effectively over long to extreme-long ranges (1,800–2,700+ metres) while also doubling as an effective field gun when firing high explosive (HE) rounds. The PaK 44 was an effective yet heavy battlefield instrument, cumbersome to transport and arrange for firing. The Krupp company produced only 51 units of the towed version, but with some changes about 100 additional units became the standard main armament for the Jagdtiger heavy tank destroyer and prototypes of the E-100 and Maus super-heavy tank designs.
