Historical Background
Washington's last major outpost on Manhattan Island is a crude star shaped earthen fort that sits atop the Harlem Heights on the east bank of the Hudson River. Several redoubts act as outworks to protect the main fort. The northern flank is guarded by a few cannon in two batteries emplaced in hilltop rocky emplacements. Below each of them are redoubts and swampy abatis manned by a mere 250 riflemen of Lt Col Rawlings Maryland and Virginia Rifle Regiment. Facing them on this November morning are 4,000 Hessian Grenadiers, Jagers, and Fusiliers led by Gen Knyphausen whose mission is to sweep them off the precipice and threaten the fort itself. The Germans comprise Just one of three major thrusts that Gen Howe has planned to overwhelm Fort Washington's Continental defenders who number less than half of his 9,000 troops.
