Historical Background
The Gutians tribes conquered Sumer and Akkad around 2200 BC, and ruled here for almost 100 years. The king of Uruk, Utukhengal, was under the rule of the Gutians. Taking advantage of the change of the Gutians rulers, he raised a general uprising. The inscription-poem tells that by his decision to go to war against gutiyans: "he delighted the citizens of Uruk and Kulaba, his city, as one man, stood behind him." First, he expelled the governors of the Gutian king Tirikan in Sumer. After that, Utukhengal fought with the Gutians army, and won the victory. Tirikan "escaped from the battlefield alone, on foot." The Gutians were thrown back into the Zagros Mountains. After the victory, Utukhengal united all Mesopotamia under his rule, becoming the king of Sumer and Akkad, and even took the title "king of the four sides of the world", reminiscent of the lost Akkadian power. Uruk and then Ur became the new political centers of Mesopotamia.
The scenario shows what a battle between the rebellious Sumerians and the Gutians might look like.
