Historical Background
In 2237 BC, Naram-Suen, the grandson of Sargon of Akkad, became king of Akkad. During his reign, the kingdom reached its greatest power. Under him, the changes in the state structure, begun by his grandfather Sargon, were brought to an end. The reign began with a rebellion in the cities of Lower Mesopotamia. The uprising was led by the city of Kish, led by Iphur-Kish. It was joined by many cities in different parts of the vast ountry. One of the surviving Akkadian poetic texts tells: "In the district of Enlil, between the temple of E-sabad and the temple of the goddess Gula, the city of Kish gathered, and they raised Iphur-Kish, the man of Kish, to the kingdom". Naram-Suen quickly and decisively defeated the rebels.
The scenario shows what a battle between Naram-Suen's army and a coalition of rebellious Sumerian cities might look like.
