Round 5 - GI02 Battle of Taginae 552 AD

mk20336 (Ostrogoths) 6 banners, 29 blocks lost
Gileforn (Byzantine) 5 banners, 24 blocks lost

Let me start the game reports. That game was all CCM is about - tactical planning, Inspired Actions, bloody and brutal battle. My barbaric forces had to close as soon as possible as they were not equipped with bows. Of course, Romans had a very precise archers so a lot of warriors died during the approach. Once we get within close quarters, two MC from Ostrogoth's allowed for VP lead. But the counter attack of Andrey was devastating and he was 1 hit away from victory. In the end the barbarian 1-block HC finished the Super Heavy Roman Cavalry and game ended with a very close result. Thanks to Andrey for fun game!

And also thanks to Giulio for really interesting and close scenario design.

Round 1 - 010 Decimum Phase 1
Vandals (gheintze) - 1 banner, 21 blocks lost
Mark McG (Byzantines) - 5 banners, 10 blocks lost

The battle opened with the Hunnic cavalry deploying into a missile line against the Vandal Medium cavalry, and a good part of the fighting took place on this flank as the Vandals tried to get to grips with the Huns, and the Hunnic withdrawal eventually ran out of room and cards after wearing down the Vandal cavalry and taking one banner. This is where the Byzantine loss occurred, as the Huns ran out of evade room.

Eventually John and the Byzantine Heavy cavalry got moving, and once in motion, commenced to charge and rather swiftly took out one depleted Medium cavalry, a full strength Heavy cavalry under Ammatus, and then a depleted HC and Gibamund in two successive Inspired Leadership cards.

A difficult scenario for the Vandals, and even with less than stellar Byzantine Command cards, the Vandals have few advantages.

Round 1: Decimum Phase 1

Travis (Vandals) 5 banners won, 13 blocks lost
EZPickins (Byzantines) 2 banners won, 20 blocks lost

After opening the game with a Mounted Charge and disintegrating the Vandal HC in the center, the Vandals mounted an ineffective attack on the Byzantine left that evened the score. The Byzantines counterattacked and were left just short of scoring enough hits to shatter the Vandal right, and with few options in the 4 card hard, the Vandals played an Order two center and destroyed an exposed Byzantine unit. The fortunes of war changed on the next turn as the Byzantines made an excellent play of Clash of Shields, but again failed to score the key hits despite a favorable tactical setup. The Vandals had drawn a favorable card, and was able to finish off exposed Byzantine units for a very lucky win.

Round 4 - 013 Tricamarum (533 AD)

mk20336 (Vandals) 6 banners, 19 blocks lost
Azzy (Byzantine) 3 banners, 25 blocks lost

Another bloody, quick and fast paces CCM game. The initial Byzantine range fire was devastating, eliminating one Vandal HC. But once Vandals closed on Romans - and especially after playing "Order Heavy Units" which moved 5 Heavy Cavalries - things started to change. In the end, Mounted Charge through the stream ended the game. Thanks to Azzy for exciting game!

Round 1 - 010 Decimum (533 AD) Phase 1

mk20336 (Vandals) 5 banners, 7 blocks lost
Kandras78 (Byzantine) 0 banners, 18 blocks lost

Long and interesting game. I managed to save my HC on left as Vandal, but Andras really well played his light troops. He was very unfortunate with his rolls and my units gradually were pushing his forces, till the board ended and last mounted Charge scored 3 banners, finishing the game. There is hope for Vandals, but only with good cards (I had them) and good rolls (I also had them). Thanks to Andras for great game.

Round 4 - 013 Tricamarum (533 AD)

John of York (Byzantines) 6 banners won, 15 blocks lost
Gheintze (Vandals) 3 banners won, 25 blocks lost

Geoff advanced a bit with his Vandals and I moved up to loose the arrows which hit mother earth without passing those any Vandals on the way down. Then Geoff closed the distance and quickly eliminated a SHBC and MC in spite of the use of AMBUSH. I used ORDER HEAVY TROOPS and hit Geoff's line. I killed off two HC but was damaged by AMBUSH and FIRST STRIKE during my attacks. Geoff then attacks with two HC from his center and takes one of my HC off the board. My line is in tatters and the best I can do is is order 3 units on my right. I trail 2 to 3 and have only two units whcih can close with the enemy line and one of those is a MC. But the MC finishes off a1 block HC and a 4 block MC. My SHBC takes care of a 2 block HC and an evading 1 block MC to get me the win. I was lucky to finish the game and thus prevent the three Vandal LC from entering play.

As always, well played Geoff, who happens to be my regular C & C Medieval opponent.

Round 1 - 010 Decimum (533 AD) Phase 2

Travis (Vandals) 3 banners won, 24 blocks lost
John of York (Byzantine) 6 banners, 16 blocks lost

Travis moved onto the hill and claimed the hill banners early on. I stood back and setup ranged shots while my SHBC made its way to the action. My ranged fire only got one hit before Travis charged off the hill but lost a HC doing so. My follow up bagged a MC and reduced a HC to 1 block. Then Travis followed this up with MOUNTED CHARGE and took out my HBC and SHBC although his charge off the hill cost him the loss of the hill banners. The game was tied at 2 each. My FORWARD card right things by finishing off one block HC and MC and also tkaing out another HC for a 5 to 2 lead. I also had a LBC on the hill, Gelimer was forced back to his own center baseline and the Vandal center was wiped out. Travis played OUTFLANKED and managed to kill off one of MC with his MC. I then cutoff that MC and ended things. There were several 1d and 2d leader checks during the game but all missed the mark. Well played by Travis.

Round 2 - 011 Decimum (533 AD) Phase 2

gotigerssc (Vandals) 6 banners won, 12 blocks lost
EZPickins (Byzantine) 1 banners, 25 blocks lost

All the fighting took place on the hill with neither side controlling it until the end. I believe there were 3 mounted charges during the game. The Vandal medium cavalry units swarmed the hill on the final turn to completely surround and defeat a weakend LBC unit who had no choice but to take a hill hex on the previous turn to prevent me from winning with control.  John played well but his dice were not cooperating for most of the game. Hard to get anything accomplished when that is the case.
