Historical Background

After Roger’s disastrous defeat at Sarmada, Baldwin II hastened up from the south to stop Il-Ghazi, who had begun to overrun the principality of Antioch. Baldwin had already drawn up his forces, when he reached Hab, which prevented Il-Ghazi, who had been joined by Toktagin, from attacking the Crusaders on ground of his choosing. Il-Ghazi decided to overwhelm Baldwin’s outnumbered forces. He placed his archers on the flanks to attrit the Crusaders and his heavy cavalry in the center to break the weakened Crusader line and gain the victory. On the right, the Count of Tripoli was driven back, but on the left Robert Fulcoy, lord of Zerdana, charged and broke through. His assistance to Baldwin now ended as his troops continued on to relieve his castle at Zerdana. In the center, Baldwin’s line was fiercely assailed as Il-Ghazi tried to complete his victory, but now Baldwin played his ace in the hole and charged out with his reserve force of knights to drive the Turks back. Towards evening, Il-Ghazi finally gave up the struggle and rode off leaving Baldwin in possession of the field. Both sides would claim victory.
