Historical Background

Il-Ghazi crossed the Euphrates in mid-June and encamped his army at Qinnasrin, some fifteen miles south of Aleppo, to await await reinforcement by Toghtekin of Damascus. Roger countered by calling for aid and moving his army of Antioch to the valley at the eastern edge of the plain of Sarmeda. Here he hoped that he could wait until Baldwin arrived. Il-Ghazi was perfectly informed of Roger’s movements and surrounded Roger during the night of the 27th. At dawn on Saturday, 28 June, scouts brought word to Roger that the camp was indeed surrounded. Roger’s options were limited: break through the enemy ranks and escape - or perish. The attacking Crusader army was at first successful, but in the end, there was no escape through the hordes of Turkish horsemen and archers. Roger was killed and the rest of the army was either captured or killed.
