Historical Background

Even though Nur ad-Din suffered a serious loss at the Battle of al-Buqaia in 1163, that defeat only made Nur ad-Din even more keen to gain revenge. In 1164, with assistance from his brother Qutb ad-Din and other vassals, he besieged the fortress of Harim. When Raymond III of Tripoli, Bohemund III of Antioch, and Joscelin III of Edessa arrived to relieve the siege, Nur ad-Din arranged his forces to convince the Crusaders he was prepared to give up the siege. Inspired by the victory at al-Buqaia, the Crusader leaders recklessly dispersed and roamed hither and yon in pursuit of Nur ad-Din’s troops. However, the Saracen’s were actually feigning retreat in order to draw the Crusader leaders into ambush. When Nur ad-Din’s troops did turn and charge, the Crusaders were forced to retreat. Many were massacred as they fell back onto swampy ground. Almost all of the Crusader leaders were captured and imprisoned. After the victory, Nur ad-Din resumed the siege and captured Harim a few days later.

Played twice with the players swapping sides. Ended as close-run 7-6 Turk wins. This scenario is well balanced and incredible fun to play. The lack of Command Cards and Action Tokens makes it hard to keep the action rolling in any way the players' want, and the close proximity of the sides with a mish-mash of scattered commands, makes it hard to reaccumulate Action Tokens without being at risk of being hit.
