Historical Background
On July 3rd the Crusader army started out to relieve Saladin’s siege of Tiberias. The Crusaders marched in three large squares (columns) with the infantry protecting the supplies and cavalry inside. Raymond of Tripoli was leading the vanguard, Balian of Lbelin commanded the rear guard and King Guy was in the center. Saladin sent soldiers to harass their advance and on the evening of the 3rd, Taki al-Din had blocked the road to the springs of Hattin, which forced the thirsty Crusaders to halt prematurely and make camp between Meskenah and Nimrin. On the 4th Guy’s center position became desperate, as Raymond’s advance guard and Balian’s rearguard managed to break through and make good their escape. More and more of Saladin’s army now turned toward the remaining Crusader center square. Surrounded and attacked from all sides, many of Guy’s thirsty and demoralized soldiers were either killed or captured without offering much resistance.
