It has taken me a while to consider this late result report, which came after deadline and after the Round 2 draw was published.
However, upon reflection, the blame lay with Hayhoe in not reporting the result immediately, and I've therefore decided to revise the Round 1 point score to reflect the outcome for Michal as 3 points for 2 wins.
The revised points will be counted into the Round 2 outcome, and the draw for Round 3.

Match 1

Javelinthrower (Prussians) 8 banners won

azzy (French) 5 banners won

This was my first ever game of Napoleonics. It was hard-fought and evenly matched all throughout. This game saw very intense action on the French right flank, with lucky shooting on my part and very dangerous charges on the French's. Quite a lot of units were eliminated, and I also learned the hard way that cavalry is not as useful against foot units as one might expect. Eventually, both sides were spent adn the action moved to the centre, where my ill-fated charge halved most of units and keft them too far from the enemy yet still vulnerable to fire. At this point the score was 6:4 in azzy's favour. And that's when I played "Grand Maneuvre", teking all of injured units to the backline and contesting the city hexes, thus taking 2 banners from my opponent. After that an intense race to exploit each other's vulnerabilities started, but with luck I responed to a cavalry charge with combined arms and finished the game. An unbelievable first experience.

Match 2
azzy (Prussians)  5 banners won

Javelinthrower (French)  8 banners won

This game saw immediate and unrelenting centre action, that only rarely spilled out onto the right flank. Azzy had two bayonet charges and centre advance cards almost immediately in order, allowing for lossless closing in. But battlebacks and shooting did make a dent in his forces. At some point, when it was 7:4 in my favor, azzy managed to contest the city, going so far as to gain the 2 banners for himself, for a time. Eventually, with quite a lot of lucky shooting, I managed to snatch a victory in the centre, where there were almost no feasible units on my part and quite a lot of fresh cavalry on my opponents'. Another wild ride of a game.

Game 1
Steve T. (Prussians) 8
David I. (French)      3

Game 2
David I  (Prussians) 8
Steve T. (French)     3

Luck was with the Prussians, especially in the first turns in game 1 and the the last three turns in game 2. In both games La Grande Manouvre was played twice by the French to organise and then evacuate the left flank, with Steve also using them to prepare a French infantry and artillery assault on the militia infantry and grenadiers on his right flank. This was thwarted when a seven dice combined arms on screening militia lancers rolled neither sabres nor cavalry. Follow up attack succeeded and he was on the cusp of claiming the two town majority banners and annihilating the Prussian left when in a single turn the five Prussian leaders strengthened by the Leadership command card took out two weakened infantry in the centre as well as the guard light cav and weakened cuirassiers to win. Each of these attacks had a reasonable chance of success but I was very fortunate that all of them came off.

Second game
Prussian: Philippe 2
French: Riverwanderer 8

A different, and much more difficult, game for the Prussians. Cards and dice conspired and go a long way to explain the margin of French victory. Lack of options around Athies set the tone for the Prussian game, whilst French cavalry surviving to support the main French attack was key, along with the late but very timely arrival of a pair of Force March cards.

Commiserations to Phiilippe who took the challenge well and put up a good fight with what he was given. Better luck next game!

If you wish to view my game with Philippe (report above), please use the latest module v5.1 download .

Here's a summary from the first game:

and for game 2...  Notice gap in "hits vs expected"! It's unusual for a long game to have this level of variance and in opposite directions. This metric doesn't take context into account, but such a wide gap must have favoured the French in what was already an outlier game, with the Prussians having little activation on their critical left flank:

Match 2

FoxK (Prussians)  8 banners won
Mark McG (French)  5 banners won

Prussians started off with a rush on the flanks, using cavalry to try and pin the French infantry. A French lack of Right commands meant the left had to react hard, and Nansouty did a magnificent job dispatching the Prussian cavalry. French were within a banner of victory at one point, but got only 2 hits of the needed 3 on a Reserve Infantry to snatch victory. Dany quickly even the town occupation requirement, and then claimed it and the extra banners he needed to get victory.

Match 1
Mark McG (Prussian) 8 banners
FoxK (French) 3 banners

Both sides stood off waiting for the other to make a move, and eventually Dany got the Franch Guard into position and attacked. The attack wasn't very successful, and the Prussian cavalry counter charged. At this point the dice went very strange, and getting hits became hard for each of us. Prussian weight of numbers and some good cards sealed the victory eventually, but could have gone more smoothly.

Played our second match of the first round. The Prussians won again but this time more decisively.

Gonzo (Prussians) 8 banners and 31 French blocks killed
gdnuke (French) 3 banners and 30 Prussian blocks killed

Gonzo takes this series, and he deserved the win. 2-1 in points for us in round 1.

Match 1

Melake, French. 5 banners
Craterus, Prussians. 8 banners

Match 2

Melake, Prussians. 8 banners
Craterus, French. 3 banners.

The first match was farther more even than the 2nd. The prussians managed to repel the french on the town, but these could counterattack with their cavalry, destroying almost all the prussian cav. units. Althouh the prussians managed to rise with the victory, french army inflicted serious damage in their ranks.

The 2nd match started well for the french, killing an opponent artillery unit and to inf. units more, but the joy didn't last too long. The prussians led a very hard attack on the center and much of the french center simply disappeared forever. there was not chance to do anything else.

Thanks Mattia for the 2 matches !!

gheintze vs rjvonline
Match 2

rjvonline (Prussians) 8 banners won

gheintze (French) 4 banners won

Same outcome as yesterday's match. The Prussians mostly relied on artillery fire initially, getting some hits. The French bared their center, except for their artillery, using a forced march (or BC) to move their infantry to their flanks (mostly right). The Prussian lancers attempted to attack the lone French artillery left behind, assisted by its own artillery, but only got 1 hit (and in particular no flag!), while they lost 2 on the battle back and were eliminated the next turn. A French attack on the right was blunted by a First Strike. Eventually two successive plays of Leadership allowed the Prussians to take the initiative, mostly around the village, with one GR (benefiting from Loophole Buildings) and one LN (benefitting from Battlefield Smoke on the counter). Brave Prussian dragoons also attacked, taking the French battery near the village and then attacking and eventually destroying a square of infantry and their commander. The dragoons were eventually trapped and their own commander made prisoner. The coup de grace was given by the Grenadiers. Geoff was handicapped by a lack of left cards (I had more than enough) while I was handicapped by a lack of right cards so not much happened on the left side of the screen after 2 of my units were reduced to 2 blocks. I did lose a RI there while Geoff lost a LT. Like yesterday, 2 of the 8 Prussian banners came from controlling the built-up areas.

gheintze vs rjvonline
Match 1

gheintze (Prussians)  8 banners won

rjvonline (French)  4 banners won

The Prussians first big move was a forced march in the center. However, their attacks were unsuccessful and the counterattack resulted in 2 banners for the French, However, the Prussians persevered and with the help of the Grenadier units on their left they managed to take the town on that side and eliminate 3 infantry units and a field artillery.  The French then countered with a cavalry charge on the Prussian right, but the stalwart Prussians only lost a single unit. The Grenadiers and heavy cavalry combined to get the last 2 banners for the Prussians.

In round 2 of Laon, the Prussians pushed forward aggressively with their Grenadiers, only to be rudely shot up by the French infantry. The dice were very friendly to the French as they continued to chew up Prussian infantry, but when the cavalry attacked it was a different story and the Prussians tied up the entire French center in squares. The game ended when the French infantry were able to secure the town, and despite some pretty darn good dice from the militia they were not to be dislodged.

French (Jim) - 8
Prussian (Mike) - 3

This is my first Napoleonic tournament. I thank my opponent Togan for interesting matches.
The first meeting was a hard struggle, and I managed to make a comeback at the very end of the battle. And Togan played the second one extremely confidently and I had no chance.

That was a second year when we meet in the first round. As always game with Andras is an exciting event.

Match 1
Kandras78 (Prussians) 8 banners won
Gileforn (French) 5 banners won

As it usually happened Prussians have started from there left flank attack. French forces spent everything to move their left flank to battle. But in this case lost 2 GLC. Then a lot of French attacks helped to hit a lot, but it was still zero at there banners counter. Prussians were powerful and got easy a town destroying a lot of French forces. So, it was 7-0 and only with last turns French made some reckless attacks and were very lucky to get 5 banners. Very lucky to them

Match 2
Kandras78 (French) 4 banners won
Gileforn (Prussians) 8 banners won

That was a hard battle with very lucky shooting from Prussians. But they lost some parts of GG so attack of the town become very difficult. The hero of the game was a leader with militia lancers. So many retires and come backs and finally getting 1,5 banners were cool. Close to the end French forces made some very successful attacks and only reckless Prussian comeback deleted 2 banners for towns and helped to receive the last banner for general.

Thanks to Andras. He deserves minimum a draw, but luck was not on his side. Really amazing games.

Match 1

gomjabbar (Prussians)     :   4 banners
MjrCatastrophe  (French) :   8 banners

The French held on to the village on their right, to get the two extra banners.
There was heavy fighting there, and the village did change hands a few times, with Mortier and V.Horn both leading from the font and paying the ultimate price
Battle honors  for the French Line inf on the hill in the center that did not go into square and held out against Prussian HC, LC and one under strength Prussian infantry, which then was eliminated on the battle back

Match 2

MjrCatastrophe  (Prussians) :   8 banners
gomjabbar (French)             :   4 banners

The Prussians on the French right stormed the village, and  moved artillery in. They  eventually evicted the last Frenchman to claim the 2 banners .
Very heavy fighting erupted  in the middle,  depleting both sides, with the Prussians coming out slightly  ahead
The forces on the French left/Prussian right barely stirred.
Prussian cavalry forced one French infantry into a square and were threatening more when a final melee just outside the village eliminated the French infantry  AND Mortier, to give the Prussians the win

thanks to Brad for two great games

Game 1 of Laon - Jim and Mike
French (Mike) - 5
Allies (Jim) - 8, possibly 9!

A slugfest, where the Prussians destroyed the French center then the French Guard countered on their left. Oddly, the game ended when the Prussians held the majority of town hexes for the first time, taking their banner count from 7 directly to 9. Bonus, or at least maybe style points?
