I use miniatures to play, I had an old RISK set with Napoleonic miniatures in it and this game was just crying out for them.
Painting 360 Miniatures took far longer than stickering the blocks but it did allow me to address this issue at the same time.
The Figures replace the Blocks on a one for one basis, so each figure is mounted separately not as a stand of figures, and are removed to indicate losses just like any other C&C game. The Figures are painted according to the Uniforms on the Sticker Art but the bases are painted to represent unit special ability's.
Here is a poorly focused Image of some of the French Forces, it gives the general idea
Regular Units have a Tan/Sand coloured Base.
* Line Infantry
* Heavy Cavalry
* Foot Artillery
Light Units have a Green Base.
* Light Infantry
* Rifle Light
* Light Cavalry
Units that can Ignore One Flag have a Red Base.
* Grenadier
* Cuirassier
(Special case is Young Guard, Green Base with Red Base Edge)
Units that can Ignore 2 Flags have a Black Base.
* Old Guard
* Grenadier Guards
* Guard Heavy Cavalry
* Guard Foot Artillery
Militia Units have an Orange Base as they retreat 3 per Flag.
Leaders have a Gold Base to distinguish Mounted Leaders from Cavalry. This method also allows me to represent leaders on foot, as anyone Leading the Forlorn Hope on Horse Back is asking to be killed
It works well in play, a quick glance at the figure base shows how many flags can be ignored and any special ability's.
So rather than separating into Light, Medium and Heavy as was done in CC:A and Battlelore, perhaps the above could prove more suitable to CC:N.
Cheers
Chris

For the sake of size comparison here is one of my British Infantry next to an Italeri 1:72 figure
