Multiple unit attack results - retreats

Two blue units attacking a single red unit. Each blue unit rolls two flags; the red unit may ignore two flags. Does the red unit ignore all flags in this case (which would seem to fit the intent of the rules; the red unit ignores two flags twice, one for each attacking unit) or are the flags cumulative (which would seem to fit the reality of actual combat - the red unit is being swarmed and has to retreat under pressure...)

each battle is separate and no results carry over
PHASE 4 - BATTLE
Battles are checked and resolved in the sequence of the player’s choice 1 ordered unit at a time.
Announce and resolve one unit’s battle entirely before beginning the next unit.

Interesting...OK, but kind of like truck-burning in Panzerblitz, one of those rules that makes sense in game terms but not in real combat.
