The IS-2 heavy tank evolved from the 85 mm up-gunned version of the KV-1 (the KV-1S): At 46 tonnes, it weighed slightly less while having more armor protection; was faster; and featured the long-barreled 122 mm L/45 D-25T main gun. This gun fired both high explosive anti-personnnel rounds and anti-tank rounds. When this tank was under development in 1943, the 122 mm gun was one of only a few Soviet guns effective against new German tanks, such as the Tiger I and Elefant. The D-25T tank gun variant of the 122 mm was even able to penetrate the upper frontal plate of the Tiger II at a range of 500-600 metres, although it did require multiple rounds to do so. For defense, it also featured one 12.7 mm and three 7.62 mm machine guns. It carried a crew of four, and could reach a top speed of 23 mph. Overall, the type was superior to the German Tiger I, Tiger II, and Panther tanks in firepower and armor protection. The Soviets produced 3,854 units from 1943 through 1945; the type first saw combat in early 1944.
