The KV series of Soviet heavy tanks were known for their heavy armour protection, particularly during the early stages of the German invasion during which they were practically immune to fire from anything except the German 8.8 cm guns. For all but the final versions, its weaknesses were its weight, relatively slow speed (18 mph maximum), and lack of mobility. The 46-tonne KV-85 (also known as the KV-1/85 and IS-85) heavy tank was a stopgap derivative of the lightest and fastest KV-1 variant (the KV-1S), armed with the 85 mm D-5T (L/55) main gun capable of knocking-out heavily-armored German tanks. For defense, it also carried one 12.7 mm and three 7.62 mm machine guns. The Soviets produced 130 units from September-October 1943, and they served on the Eastern front.
