The Sd.Kfz. 234 family of eight-wheeled armored cars provided the German military a fast and versatile reconnaissance vehicle capable of carrying higher-caliber tank guns in its fully-rotating turret. Though of a similar size and appearance to the Sd.Kfz. 231 family that they replaced--and serving the same reconnaissance and screening roles--the Sd.Kfz. 234 was a completely new design. They required a crew of four to operate and had a top speed of 52 mph. The Sd.Kfz. 234/2's turret carried the same main gun as later versions of the Panzer III tank (the 5 cm KwK 39/1 L/60) making it one of the most heavily armed armoured cars available, but the type had thin armor relative to tanks. It also carried one 7.92 mm MG 42 machine gun. German industry produced 101 units between 1943 and 1945, and they served on the Eastern Front and in the Battle of Normandy.
