This German self-propelled heavy assault gun featured a heavily armored, open-topped boxy casemate superstructure atop a StuG III chassis. It mounted the 15 cm sIG 33/1 (schweres Infanterie Geschütz 33) (L/11) infantry gun and a ball-mounted 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun. A crew of five operated the vehicle, and its maximum speed was just 12 mph. The Alkett company built 24 units in 1942, all of which saw service on the Eastern Front. Although slow they were particulary effective at destroying buildings and fortifications using the Stielgranate 42 high-explosive projectiles.
