Round 3: River Hippis

Giulio (Persian) 2 banners, 31 blocks lost
Travis (Byzantine) 7 banners, 20 blocks lost

The Byzantine left was able to hold out just long enough to allow the stronger Byzantine right and center to gang up on the Persian units already across the river. A back and forth game much closer than the score would indicate, and my opponent had many excellent moves foiled by uncooperative dice rolls that would have definitely changed the outcome.

Round 6 019 Solachon (586 AD) Kardarigan’s Stand

Giulio (Sassanid) - 1 banner, 23 blocks lost
RiverWanderer (Byzantine) - 5 banners, 5 blocks lost

The Byzantine 11-card hand lacked sparkle but suggested a plan focussed on the Sassanid left flank. Lack of any scout, leadership, cavalry charge, first strike or ambush cards did not bode well for what the Sassanids might have in store but at least "Counter Attack" might prove useful.

Opening with their best card, Forward, Byzantine Cavalry closed to attack the Sassanid left flank, claiming a banner as a Light Bow Cavalry unit fell in the first assault. Sassanids swiftly reorganised to strengthen their hold on the hill.

Skirmishing on both sides achieved little, not even the Byzantine's use of "Darken The Skies". Then, an early Sassanid claim to a "Scout" banner forced the Byzantine pace and they risked another close combat by their medium cavalry. Luckily for them, the Sassanids had only a weak response that proved suicidal for one Auxilia unit, allowing a follow up attack to eliminate a second one.

Now came the crux of the battle, opening with a Sassanid Mounted Charge. Byzantines held their breath, ready with "Counter Attack", everything hanging on the next few dice rolls. Lady Luck was ungenerous to say the least; Byzantines suffered only a retreat and an evade, gaining a hit in battle back. Now, it was the Byzantine's turn to charge, with almost certain odds to finish the battle. However, Lady Luck was still waking up. The charge of the Super Heavies failed completely for lack of a leader and they scurried away, far to the rear, in disgrace. It was left for the light cavalry to salvage the attack by finishing off a Sassanid Medium Cavalry unit.

The Byzantines were now ahead by 3 banners but there was yet a chance for the Sassanids, if fortune would allow it. It was not to be - once more, a single unit - medium cavalry - was ordered forward to be betrayed by the dice. Able to counter the, now weakened, unit with a double attack, the Byzantines claimed victory.

Thanks to Giulio for the game and sympathy too, as Lady Luck seemed to be very unkind to him on this occasion.

Gentlemen, I don't know if you have seen my post on BGG but there's an updated 1.3 version of the
VASSAL module . It fixes a couple of preset scenarios. Everything else remained the same. It's a good idea to upgrade it anyway.

Round 7: 007 Satala (530 AD)

Giulio (Sassanid): 1 banners, 22 blocks lost
mk20336 (Byzantine): 6 banners, 5 blocks lost

Another quick, brutal and decisive CCM game. All in all we played 3 cards - the Mounted Charge in first round killed 3 units and actually set the game. I had good cards, good rolls and there was nothing what Giulio can do to prevent the inevitable. Thanks for playing!

Round 7: 007 Satala (530 AD)

scipio1zama (Sassanid): 2 banners, 26 blocks lost
stormwalker (Byzantine): 6 banners, 13 blocks lost

This game took us 3 hours to play and it was very close for most of the time. And then a perfect Rally roll for the Byzantine forces and a number of very lucky clashes tipped the balance. This eventually proved enough for the Byzantine army to win the battle.

Many thanks to Mike for playing!

Round 4: 017 Lazic War (555 AD) Onoguris

polonus100 (Sassanid): 1 banners, 25 blocks lost
stormwalker (Byzantine): 7 banners, 15 blocks lost

This game was set by a timely-played First Strike, which wiped out a Sassanid SHBC along with a leader. After this the Sassanid forces were unable to withstand another attack and conceded the last 3 banners.

Many thanks to Mikel for playing!

Round 6: 019 Solachon (586 AD) Kardarigan’s Stand

PCScipio42 (Sassanid): 3 banners, 22 blocks lost
mk20336 (Byzantine): 5 banners, 14 blocks lost

That was very close and tense game; except for Fire & Close, Leadership any Section and Counter Attack I had pretty poor cards. Still, I started to position my forces for F&C, launched it and... almost was outright routed by counterattack. A lucky MC from Inspired Leadership saved me.

I am very curious how will the table look like!
