Historical Background
In November 1114, a severe earthquake struck the Principality of Antioch, damaging many castles. The following spring, while supervising the repairs, Prince Roger heard rumors that the Sultan had sent Bursuq to lead a Turkish invasion. Roger sent a messenger to King Baldwin I of Jerusalem requesting assistance. Baldwin immediately mobilized and when Bursuq heard of Baldwin’s relieving force, he withdrew to the east. Most of Roger’s allied leaders then assumed the threat was over and returned home. However, as soon as the allied host dispersed, Bursuq invaded again with a smaller army (conflicts with a number of subordinates resulted in the departure of some of the Turkish units). Early in September Roger received word that Bursuq’s army was at Tell Danith watering point, near Sarmin. Roger rapidly advanced and took Bursuq’s army by surprise before he could completely set up camp. Baldwin, Count of Edessa led the left wing, while Prince Roger personally commanded the center. The left broke the Turks, who occupied a hillside behind their camp, while Roger succeeded and occupied the camp. The Turcopole archers were thrown back by a Seljuk counterattack. This disrupted the knights behind them, and only after some tough fighting did the Crusaders repulse the Turks. Bursuq’s defeated army retreated.
