Round 4 – 505 Wartenburg (3 October 1813)
Grondeaux (Allies) – Asyncritus/Timothy Phelps (French)
9 (26 blocks lost) - 6 (33 blocks lost)
This was a bad day to be a leader, with 3 of seven leaders falling in battle. Much of the action was on the French left and Allied left. Initial Allied advances pushed the French out of Bleddin, and bloodied the French right. The French, in the meanwhile, advanced on their left and chewed up the Allied right. The initial Allied assault on Wartenburg was successful in taking the town, but a French counter-attack threw the Prussians out. The Allies made good use of a Leader Takes Command card on their left, and initiated a series of attacks around Bleddin. When the smoke cleared, the French had lost Franquemont, Beaumont and an LC. A counter-attack by the French cavalry killed Mecklenburg and a Prussian LC. The end game saw the Allies use a series of combined arms attacks on Wartenburg to first weaken, and then push the French out of town. What started out looking to be a quick Allied victory turned into a nail-biter, as the French bounced back. A bit too late, as it turned out. Thanks to Timothy for an enjoyable game.
